We value this historical knowledge for many reasons: we want to learn more about our ancestors and their lifestyles, and we want to gain insight from these distant people and cultures. But these efforts finally turned into an idea: we can benefit from facing the history that has emerged. In other words, the historical method does not deny that the value of art is ultimately therapeutic, even if one tends to forget or reject it. This is a (somewhat ironic) resistance from science to the utility of art therapy. Information is valuable only as a means of purpose whose purpose is to clarify our current needs.
This understanding of art has remained steady in recent years, but I believe this is the only viable way to think about the value of art. As we’ve seen before, other methods should default even if they deny it. To think of art from a therapeutic perspective is not to give up the esoteric, but to accept the esoteric and return art to the center of modern culture and modern life.
